Abe-Koga Withdraws from County Supervisor Race; Throws Support to Simitian
Mountain View City Council Member and former Mayor Margaret Abe-Koga today announced that she is withdrawing from the race for Santa Clara County Supervisor (District 5), and is throwing her support behind State Senator Joe Simitian.
In an announcement e-mailed to her supporters earlier today, Abe-Koga said Simitian "...has served Santa Clara County with distinction, hard work, and constancy," and urged her supporters to join her in supporting the candidacy of State Sen. Joe Simitian in the June 5 election for District 5 County Supervisor.
Simitian said he was delighted by the announcement of support from Abe-Koga, who he characterized as a, "particularly well-regarded locally elected official".
"Margaret has waged a strong campaign," said Simitian, "which makes her support particularly gratifying." Simitian said he hopes and expects that Abe-Koga will have a long career in public service, and that he looks forward to working with her as a partner on regional issues. "Margaret brings so much talent to the public arena; she's a first rate public official, and a wonderful partner and ally. I appreciate her active support, and look forward to tapping her talents during the course of the campaign."

SIMITIAN ANNOUNCES 2012 BID FOR SANTA CLARA COUNTY SUPERVISOR
PALO ALTO -- State Senator Joe Simitian today announced his 2012 candidacy for the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors (District 5).
Simitian made his announcement before a crowd of more than 200 friends and supporters in Palo Alto.
"Our county government deals with some of our region and our state's greatest challenges," said Simitian, "including health care, welfare, public safety, and regional land use. More than 1.7 million county residents expect county government to deliver real results on a daily basis. I look forward to being part of that effort."
Simitian is currently serving his second and final term in the California State Senate. He was elected to the Senate in 2004 and reelected in 2008 with 75% of the vote. His prior public service also includes stints as President of the Palo Alto School Board, Mayor of Palo Alto, County Supervisor (1997-2000), and State Assemblymember.
Simitian is running for the 5th District Supervisorial seat currently held by Supervisor Liz Kniss, who will be termed out in 2012.
