Joe on the Job The Scotts Valley Unified School District is one of the latest California school systems to voice support for legislation that would make it easier for communities to enact parcel taxes for schools.
District trustees on May 26 adopted a resolution in support of Senate Constitutional Amendment 6 by Sen. Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto, which would reduce the voter margin to approve a parcel tax from a two-thirds super-majority to 55 percent.

Joe on the Job

The artist responsible for brightening up Campbell’s downtown has been named the artist of the year for the 11th Senate District.
Sonya Paz’s colorful creations have caught the eye of State Sen. Joe Simitian, who recently announced Paz as the 11th Senate District Artist of the Year, an honor given out every two years.
For the next year, Paz’s artwork will be displayed on the walls of the state capitol, and the senate will include her biography and an image of her work in its contemporary art collection catalogue.
"Sonya’s passion for life is contagious," Simitian said. "Each of her paintings is brimming with enthusiasm. It’s hard to walk out of Sonya’s gallery without a smile on your face."
Surprised by the announcement on her voicemail, Paz didn’t really believe she had won until she spoke with Simitian and asked what qualified her to win.
"I try to remain as humble as possible, but it’s nice," Paz said. "Especially being a California native, I feel like it’s a nice honor representing your state." Paz wasn’t honored for just her artistic skills alone, but for how she has put them to use.
Back in February she held a three-day painting marathon that ended with nine murals that are now on display at the Humane Society of Silicon Valley’s new facility in Milpitas. More locally, Paz offered her talents to design the bright banners on downtown light posts encouraging patrons to shop and dine in Campbell.
And she’s out on the downtown streets every month as well, taking the lead in putting on the Downtown Campbell Art Walks.
